“My dream for my children is that they complete their education.”
For Lalyn, a single mother of three from Dawahon Island in the Philippines, everything she does is for her children’s future. With limited opportunities to earn a living, Lalyn made the difficult decision to leave her daughter Chloe in the care of her grandmother and move to Manila for work.
Earning approximately 3,000 pesos ($50) a month and supplementing her income by renting out cellphones for just 5 pesos (9 cents) an hour, Lalyn works hard to provide for her family. But even with these efforts, putting food on the table remains a daily struggle.
From Lalyn: “The hardest thing about being a single mother is not having enough money, not having enough to buy food…when your children ask for food and you can’t give them what they need.”
For Lalyn, one of the hardest parts of being away from her children is knowing they may go to school hungry. Through Thrive’s daily school meal program, her children receive nutritious food, easing some of the financial pressure she faces and giving her peace of mind while she works far from home.
And for Lalyn, nothing brings greater joy than seeing her children succeed. When she learned that Chloe had earned honors in school, she couldn’t have been prouder. Chloe’s dedication to her education is a reflection of the brighter future Lalyn hopes to give all three of her children.
From Lalyn: “I felt so happy when I found out Chloe received honors in school. She never wants to be absent from school, otherwise she won’t have honors.”
Behind every child Thrive serves is a family working tirelessly to give them a better life. Your generosity helps mothers like Lalyn worry a little less about their children’s next meal and focus a little more on the futures they dream of for them.
Thank you for supporting mothers like Lalyn and helping their children thrive.
